Vitality@Work FAQs

1. What is Vitality@Work?

Vitality@Work is a gamified employee wellness platform for corporates, with Discovery Health and Vitality staff piloting it for the next 4-6 months. The platform isn’t just for the fitness bunnies – it’s truly built for everyone. It’s a fun, social way to build healthier habits and snag rewards along the way.

On the platform, you can expect a digital personal trainer for your fitness level and goal, a digital dietitian with personalised recipes and shopping lists, and a digital performance coach to set targets and track your progress. You can also connect and chat with like-minded colleagues, compete in the Team Challenge with fair, inclusive scoring, receive gamified awards to stay motivated, and earn fun rewards to celebrate your effort and achievements.

2. Who is eligible to participate in the pilot?

The pilot is only open to Discovery Health, Africa Health Hub (MSO) and Vitality RSA permanent staff, and Discovery Health fixed term contractors. This means that you should not forward the invitation emails to anyone else, and if you or your colleagues have not received the invite, they should contact their HR manager to understand if they are eligible.

3. Do I need to join the team challenge to participate in Vitality@Work?

No, you don’t need to join the Team Challenge to use Vitality@Work. You can simply sign up to the platform to access gamified features, customised wellness podcasts and blogs, personalised workouts and meal plans, fun activity groups and social chat groups, performance tracking, and awards.

The platform is designed for everyone, from beginners taking their first steps to seasoned athletes. If you have been out of the game for a while, the Hub is a great place to explore wellness content at your own pace. You can also join the beginner walking group or some other activity groups to connect with people who are on a similar journey to you. However, joining the team challenge will help your team improve their rankings and stand a chance to win team prizes.

4. I have registered and onboarded onto the platform. Do I need to attend the onsite sessions?

Whether or not you have already onboarded, the onsite induction sessions are a great way to learn more about the platform, understand the team challenge, how the scoring works, and help you troubleshoot any issues. You can still gain a broader understanding of the platform even if you are not experiencing any specific issues. There will also be exclusive rewards for those who attend.

5. I am a beginner at exercise. Will I automatically be at the bottom of the leaderboard?

No, not at all! The leaderboard is ranked by the Total XP, which you can earn across five categories in the app: exercise & movement, nutrition, social connection, achievements and wellness content.

Scoring is normalised for inclusivity & fairness, allowing everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes to contribute to their teams and compete on an even footing.

The more you engage with all sections of the app, the more you will boost your XP. Click on the link below to learn more about how to earn XP.

6. I want to join a team, but I don’t see my team on the platform.

Some teams have been combined so that team sizes are fair across the business. Click on the links below for an explanation of the team names.

7. What if I selected the wrong team?

Don’t worry – it happens! If you need to switch teams to be with your actual squad, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Navigate to the Home or Community Tab: Open your app and tap on the Home or Community section.
  2. Access the Leaderboard: Select the Vitality@Work Challenge.
  3. Leave the leaderboard: Tap the 3-dot menu icon next to the leaderboard name and then select ‘Leave leaderboard’. This will safely remove you from the incorrect team.

Re-Join Your Correct Team: Simply head back into the Vitality@Work Challenge tile. You will be prompted to join a team again – this time, just select your correct work team, and you’ll be ready to start earning XP with your colleagues! It is important to note – any points earned in the team will remain as a part of that team and will not be transferred to the new team.

8. I have been having technical issues with the platform – onboarding, linking a device, data syncing, etc.

Log your issue with [email protected] so the team can be aware of this and help you troubleshoot.

9. How does XP relate to Vitality points?

For the pilot, Vitality Active Rewards/Personal Health Pathways and Vitality@Work are not integrated. This means that you must make sure that you have linked your device/mobile phone and you are sharing your exercise data with each platform separately.

When you engage with the exercise features of Vitality@Work, you will earn your regular Vitality points in Vitality Active Rewards/Personal Health Pathways and XP in the Vitality@Work platform. In addition, any other type of engagement across the Vitality@Work platform, including the four other categories: nutrition, social connection, achievements, and wellness content, will also help you earn XP in the platform.

10. Are there daily limits on the XP I can earn?

To encourage a healthy, balanced lifestyle and keep the competition fair for everyone, we use “Sustainable Caps” on daily XP. These limits reward consistent habits rather than over-exertion:

  • Exercise and Movement (Workouts + Steps): Up to 300 XP per day. You’re welcome to stay active beyond this, but points will stop accumulating for the leaderboard once you hit this daily goal.
  • Education and Learning: Up to 20 XP per day for engaging with content like podcasts or articles.
  • Nutrition: Up to 20 XP per day for exploring recipes or using shopping lists.

If you track a step-based workout (like a run or a walk), our platform simply integrates those steps into your daily movement total rather than counting the same effort twice. This ensures a level playing field for everyone while making sure every bit of your hard work is accurately rewarded!

11. How do Leagues work?

Leagues build on the existing Team Challenge to make the competition more structured and engaging. At the start of Season 1, all teams will be ranked based on their results from the seeding challenge and then divided into 6 smaller leagues, each made up of similarly performing teams.
This means that instead of competing against all 45 teams on the platform, your team will compete against 7–8 teams that are at a similar performance level – making the challenge more meaningful and the rankings more relevant to your team’s progress.
Within the app, you will primarily see and track the leaderboard for your own league, rather than the full overall leaderboard. Your focus therefore shifts to: how does my team rank within our league?
